Immunizations Reduce Hospitalization and Mortality Rates

Further evidence of the benefit of influenza and pneumonia vaccinations comes from a new study in Sweden. In the city of Stockholm all persons 65 years of age or older were invited to receive a vaccination for influenza or pneumonia. Over 100,000 of the 260,000 seniors in Stockholm were vaccinated in an 8 week campaign.

In the next 6 months they tracked hospitalizations and mortality in both the vaccinated population and those who were not vaccinated. Their was a 46% reduction in hospitalizations for influenza and a 29% to 52% reduction (depending upon the type of pneumonia) in hospitalization for pneumonia in those receiving immunizations.

They also tracked overall mortality in these two groups. They found a 57% decrease in mortality from all causes in the immunized group compared to those who didn't get immunized. The study authors conclude, "These findings show that general vaccination leads to substantial health benefits and to a reduction of mortality from all causes in this age group."
